Reading Teachers Online Arsenal- RTOA Has A HOME!
The url is RTOA.US I'm still working on how to make this work, I'm not sure which content manager to use or what. Right now the blog is on http://rtoa.us/wp I've added all of this material as well as new. It will be much easier to navigate and find what you want.
I can't wait to see you there. I apologize for all the moving- but, we are stationary at rtoa.us that is officially my domain.
I am hoping to branch out and include other reading series this summer- we'll see where that takes us!

Today, my blog site was falsely id'ed as having SPAM.
Luckily, I happened to go to it in the 'window' of time they give.
I still don't know if I'll get it back.
I have NO CLUE what caused them to id me as having a SPAM blog.

*When printing from a UK site, using our 'standard' paper when they call for
A4 or A3- it's easy to do- after pressing print, you should be able to find
a box or tab (EVERYBODY'S computer setup is different) that says -something
like page scaling and then choose something like 'Fit to Printable Area'- be
sure that if you have the option to choose the paper choice by the pdf paper
size- DO NOT CHOOSE IT! I have to uncheck in mine. After you get the paper
like you like it, print like usual. I'd recommend writing down what's you're
best way to download stuff outside the US.

FYI-
Their A4 paper is 8.3 X 11.7- our Regular 'Letter' paper is 8.5 X 11.
Their A5 paper is 5.8 x 8.3- we have 'Executive' Paper 7.25 X 10.5.
Their A6 paper is 4.13 X 5.83- we don't have one to compare- UNLESS you
print 2 on 1 sheet!
Their B5 paper is 6.93 X 9.84- our closest paper on that one is Executive
also.
Most of the sites seem to use A4&A5.

I've been waiting on a new Fling the Teacher update. I think it's best for review- the kids really get a big kick out of it.
I try to make these the best I can, it's hard for me to find documents (word, rtf, etc) that enable me to copy and paste- I'm not the best typist- BY FAR! It's hard enough keeping up w/what I HAVE to do- so if you've got a list of questions, or vocab or spelling you'd like for me to do- just let me know. You can leave a comment (I'll get back by email), or post in The Treasures Reading Teachers forums or send an email (most of you, in the forums have it). I'd love to have additional oral vocab (Tier 2) that goes w/each story.
I'm working on a Moodle site, so it'll be easier to find content for your specific grade and unit.
Since my oldest is starting 3rd gr unit 3 soon, I'll be updating playkidsgames and quizlet, probably this weekend.
Enjoy the gorgeous weather we have this time of year- I thank GOD I'm in East Tennessee!

It changes a regular youtube page into a visual map of related videos. THIS IS COOL!
When you hover over the videos- the ones related to it show up as well.
Also, each video you click, it'll show each video you've watched- by connecting them as well as putting colored symbols in the upper left-hand corner.

I joined a video site a few months ago and the it went offline.
They just relaunched it today.
I went in for a bit- and there's almost 1000 videos just for Language Arts!

WatchKnow makes educational videos for kids EXTREMELY easy to find. Now they claim to have over 10,000 videos placed in over 2,000 categories. It's kinda like a wiki site- contributors (even anonymous) work together, to edit video information as well as the directory by drag and drop, which means it's ALWAYS growing! Here's a video on how to edit. Since it's an opensourced project that welcomes even anonymous contributions, the project engages teachers to act as community moderators. It's a non-profit and receives support through an anonymous donor through the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.
Navigation is just as easy. Not only can you filter results by category, but there's a slideable age-filter.

Here's a place that has a nice interactive site about microfinance(loans).
Evidently it's based on a book, about a guy getting a loan and eventually that brings him out of poverty and he's ab/e to create jobs for others in his community. Change takes place, one person at a time! This is how the world 'changes'.

Like word games and such? This site takes the $ generated from ads and puts 70% to charity. This Spywatch site is back in WWII. Evacuees are on the trail of a spy. Kids need to complete phonics and spelling activities to complete this. They will need paper and pencil for this activity, or you may choose to print the ‘Cluebooks’ or other documents. May be a good idea to have them copy some of the activity pages from the board, to practice writing. Remember that this is in UK English, so some words on documents may have a different spelling. I’ve found that most word families and phonics activities DON’T have different spellings. Each suspect has their own story and 4 activities that develop phonics and spelling. Mr.Hubbard- dictionary skills, Mrs.Fox- spelling using words with common letter strings, Mr.Smart- rhyming words, Farmer Rankle- compound and hidden words. The kids will collect clues and write in Cluebook or on a piece of paper. Spymaster recruits spycatchers. Under his tutelage, children develop 4 key Spyskills. Which teaches 4 levels of composition. For ‘Go on a Spytrail’, I found that the word ‘favourite’ is used 1 time- and in a sort thought, bought and sort go together, in compound words eggcup was an answer. Now they do have use the word cigarettes- it was a ration in WWII- it takes awhile to do this, but NICELY put together! I didn’t do ‘Spycatching’, but when I do, I’ll just update this post. Important....

I feel like everyone needs to know this. There's a document format that I've started seeing quite often. It's .xps This format, when you have a software that'll view it, will take the info and make 1/2 of the size of a file that a pdf would. I know when I installed the XPS viewer from Microsoft, that when I go to download or print, I can choose to download to an 'xps' file. So, I can choose to print on my printer or download the file to my computer in an xps file. The XPS file, prints FINE- actually, better than fine. I have started using this format whenever I have the option. It has something to do with xml and by knowing that, I feel like it may be something I may want to switch to.
Microsoft has a free viewer and their are other options out there. I have something called NiXPS that I use. The software I use, I can convert to a pdf document, a tiff format or svg. I think a lot of this kind of software will export to a pdf file. If I get the SAME pdf file and the SAME xps file from the SAME place, chances are the pdf will be close to 2X the size. However, if I chose to make a copy of the xps file a pdf on my computer- the difference is only a few kildbytes.
A lot of files I put on my 'sharing' spots, will be xps files. I have so many pdf and ed movie files that I've filled up my original 320GB hard drive and an extra one I bought 5 months ago (320GB also). So, I've HAD to find something to free up some space. There's only so many dvd's you can burn- LOL
I just wanted y'all to know that this is a file format that you may want to an LEAST find a free viewer for, just so you can print files from other places. You may already have been aware of this format, but I just really started using it about 5 months ago.
You can easily find an xps viewer by typing 'free xps viewer' in your favorite search engine.

Discovery Education On Demand By Comcast is a first-in-the-nation service that will give Indiana families instant, at-home access to educational video clips, hands-on activities, interactive content, subject guides, puzzles, and homework help tools. Content is available at no additional cost to local Comcast Digital Cable customers on their cable TV service and to all Indiana parents and students online. (With free registration, persons outside of Indiana may access the content as well.)

Currently, more than 200 videos are available on demand through the service, and all "engage students in learning, and support and supplement the work of educators in classrooms across the state," said Stephen Wakefield, communications manager for Discovery Education. "These videos, aligned to state standards and organized by grade level and subject area, cover core academic disciplines including math, science, English/language arts, and social studies."

Content will be continually refreshed with new videos, and new content will be added online regularly as well, said Wakefield.

Discovery Education On Demand By Comcast was inspired by the personal experience of Scott Tenney, senior vice president of Comcast's Indianapolis region. Nearly 20 years ago, Tenney and his wife were seeking tools to supplement the education of their son, who had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and dyslexia. Looks like a great, fun motivational tool.
You upload your material and there's a Reading Log, Vocabulary with built-in dictionary access and a Listen and Practice Spelling System.
I'm thinking you can add science and social studies.
You register then go back and log in where you'll a PDF file with instructions and registration codes for students to access your postings.
A student can sign up without signing up for a classroom and the list of books and vocabulary cards will be saved. A student can also use the site without signing up at all, but info used at that time will not be saved, but they can print out what they make.

jeopardy Teachers- please reply if interested- also new 3rd grade game

I am in the process of making online games. Of course vocab and spelling games- I can do that. However, there is an online jeopardy template that I can create games for- however, I don't have time to read all the stories, and find out who's doing what each week. If you're interested in me making jeopardy for student review- if you can give me a guideline of what to include- what aspects of the story what kind of grammar, etc... I'll be more than glad to post them. I can have 5 categories with 5 questions. These can be done on IWB, or for a small group or just student review.

Where it has the story title and Sp1 or sp2- I had a spelling list with 20 words- so, I made 2 lists with 15 words apiece.
I've got other games I plan on making from other places. If you have any special listsor requests- let me know.
