- Here's a place that has a nice interactive site about microfinance(loans).
Evidently it's based on a book, about a guy getting a loan and eventually that brings him out of poverty and he's ab/e to create jobs for others in his community. Change takes place, one person at a time! This is how the world 'changes'.
Myself, I'm thinking (hoping) that this story is what our President is starting. I have such hope......
http://onehen.opportunity.org/ - Like word games and such? This site takes the $ generated from ads and puts 70% to charity. They sponsor everyone from UNICEF to Ronald McDonald House, to the American Lung Association, to jumpstart- just to name a few! Evidently, you get to pick the charity! (i'm sure you need to choose from their list).
So far, they don't have any games that feature 'questionable' subjects, so maybe you can put these on a class site. There's wordsearches, memory, black jack and sudoku. I emailed this guy, to ask him if the games would stay G-rated- and he told me they would. He said that his sponsors wouldn’t have it any other way. So, feel free to list these on your website without worrying about other game content.
http://www.gamesthatgive.net/ - Here are many documentaries available for free and on demand. You can embed these in a webpage, for students to have access to if they miss it in class, or just for reference. http://www.snagfilms.com/films/
- Here’s another site for free shows. You do have to sign up. I watch old episodes of The Electric Company here as well as a show called “Boo” for my 2 year old. Shows on NBC, CBS, etc are also on here. There’s also a few documentaries. http://www.hulu.com/
- This Spywatch site is back in WWII. Evacuees are on the trail of a spy. Kids need to complete phonics and spelling activities to complete this. They will need paper and pencil for this activity, or you may choose to print the ‘Cluebooks’ or other documents. May be a good idea to have them copy some of the activity pages from the board, to practice writing. Remember that this is in UK English, so some words on documents may have a different spelling. I’ve found that most word families and phonics activities DON’T have different spellings. Each suspect has their own story and 4 activities that develop phonics and spelling. Mr.Hubbard- dictionary skills, Mrs.Fox- spelling using words with common letter strings, Mr.Smart- rhyming words, Farmer Rankle- compound and hidden words. The kids will collect clues and write in Cluebook or on a piece of paper. Spymaster recruits spycatchers. Under his tutelage, children develop 4 key Spyskills. Which teaches 4 levels of composition. For ‘Go on a Spytrail’, I found that the word ‘favourite’ is used 1 time- and in a sort thought, bought and sort go together, in compound words eggcup was an answer. Now they do have use the word cigarettes- it was a ration in WWII- it takes awhile to do this, but NICELY put together! I didn’t do ‘Spycatching’, but when I do, I’ll just update this post. The goal of that part is the composition elements. http://www.discip.ac-caen.fr/anglais/documents/cottenceau/Spywatch/intro.htm
- Here's a free download for authorware. Teaches kids about programming and authoring programs. It's free, there's tutorials and even screencasts to match. You may even learn something! I plan on testing it out. It's a beta, but they obviously have a decent following- http://squeakland.org/
